THE IDEA
Innovation does not always begin with a blank sheet of paper.
Sometimes the most productive starting point is an existing technology. It already has a manufacturing base, known behaviours, known limitations and a track record in the environment where it was developed.
The opportunity is to change the context. A component designed for one industry may have an overlooked advantage somewhere else. A control technique from one system may solve a problem in another. A product built for a particular scale may become interesting at a completely different scale.
The work is in the translation.
Cross-industry ideas do not become products by themselves. They need engineering. Materials may need to change. Controls may need to be reworked. Manufacturing constraints appear. Standards and customer expectations are different.
That is why the question is useful: it gives us a direction for exploration, but the development process determines whether the idea can become something practical.
